"A must for all the plant novices out there like me who want to increase the number of plants in their home without spending a fortune." - Janice
IF YOU'RE READING THIS
You probably love houseplants.
From when you’re at your desk studying, talking to your plants like they’re your best friends, or showing them off to your guests as if they were your children, they’re probably a pretty core part of your life.
One thing a lot of aspiring houseplant aficionados look towards is plant propagation.
Excuse me Mr Sheffield… WTF is plant propagation?
I'm glad you asked...
Plant propagation is a way to create new houseplants, from your existing ones.
Why would I want to do that though?
There’s a zillion reasons, but I’ll highlight a few:
WHY PROPAGATE PLANTS?
- It can save TONNES of $$$, especially if you’re an enthusiast crazy plant man/woman (like me)
- It allows you to sell plants and make $$$
- It’s a great way to grow (pun intended) your houseplant skill
- It’s the most REWARDING way to grow houseplants
- To extend the lineage of your houseplants for DECADES into the future (and pass them on to others)
- Creating a houseplant family is really, really fun
Maybe you’ve tried it before but ended up with a pot full of dirt and no plants, wondering where you went wrong.
I know when I had a budding green thumb it was always something that was a little intimidating and complicated at first.
After all, common propagation techniques and methods can be really risky, or just straight-up wrong.
And propagating your own plant can mean waiting a few weeks.
And any mistake can put you straight back to square one.
For example, not getting the right light or temperature.
Or cutting at the wrong part of the plant (you’d be surprised how many people do this!)
There are also dozens of different propagation methods for different types of houseplants.
It can all be a bit overwhelming!
I know this because I stumbled my way through plant propagation and wasted a whole bunch of time, effort (and money) in the process.
And there’s something about losing a newborn houseplant that’s quite heartbreaking.
"SOOOOOO... I WANT TO LEARN TO PROPAGATE PLANTS. SHOULD I GO TO YOUTUBE?"
For as much as houseplants have exploded in popularity over the last few years, it can still be difficult to find simple, step-by-step instructions to propagate your houseplants.
It's especially difficult to find everything you need in one video or website.
And even if you do find one, they always seem to be missing key pieces of information that are absolutely crucial to succeed.
This means you end up in a frenzy Google-ing different tips and trying to piece it all together yourself.
This is not only frustrating, but more importantly delays your first plant being successfully propagated!
And I don't know about you, but I’m someone that likes to spend less time researching, and more time growing my plant collection!
As my YouTube channel has grown, I now feel that I have an opportunity to create the workshop that I WISH I had access to when I first started growing houseplants, and would have saved me TONS of time, energy, and money on failed attempts.
